The Naughty American, a new web magazine that hit the web at the beginning of this month, has The Beacon’s own Justin Jeffre in a headline story today:  ”98 Degrees Singer Turns Up Heat On Politicians.” Say what you want about Jeffre, or our humble efforts here at The Beacon—but our Cincinnati brand of media activism is now becoming a national story!

Here are some of my favorite excerpts from the Naughty American piece:

Cincinnati political journalist Kevin Osborne, of the weekly City Beat, described Jeffre’s new venture as helping to redefine the former cover boy.

“Since his defeat in that [mayoral] race, he became involved with the Beacon,” Osborne said. “I almost see that as his penance and as a way for him to gain some political credibility. Now, Jeffre is seen at various political events and rallies so often, people have started to forget about his boy-band past, and I think he likes that.”

Osborne said the opinionated Beacon ruffles the feathers of more than a few politicians and journalists.

“Like many blogs, it has a stated point of view and doesn’t follow the same rules as traditional media, which I think throws them for a loop,” he said. “Also, like many blogs and other online endeavors, it can occasionally be rude and devolve into personal bashing and some juvenile remarks in its comments section.

“That said, I can guarantee you most local politicians and political reporters still read it.”

I also like how the article ends:

“It was hard going through a race and it was a huge uphill battle amid bloggers taking pot shots at you and people questioning your motives and spreading lies, but I feel like I sort of pissed off all the right people,” Jeffre said with a smile. “So I’m OK with that.”
