U.S. Congressman John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, will be the keynote speaker at the Cincinnati NAACP’s Freedom Fund Dinner—October 5th, 2007, at The Duke Energy Center. Obtaining a speaker of this magnitude demonstrates the incredible success President Smitherman has enjoyed since being elected the new president of Cincinnati’s revitalized NAACP. Despite intense criticism from naysayers, Smitherman was able to secure financial support for the NAACP convention in Cincinnati next year, and now he has secured a national figure for next month’s event.
"Having a keynote speaker of this stature is a tremendous win for the local branch and the City of Cincinnati,” said Smitherman. “Hosting a political figure of this magnitude is a great segue into the national NAACP convention next summer.”
Smitherman continues to grow the local NAACP, transforming it from a nearly irrelevant handful of people to a regional force implementing real change in Cincinnati and Hamilton County. In his few months in office, Smitherman worked to get minority representation on The Banks Working Group, and he led a successful referendum to get the jail-tax issue on the ballot (instead of letting Commissioners implement the tax against voter will).
And, as mentioned above, he has secured financial support for next year’s convention, as well as bringing a national figure to Cincinnati for next month’s event.
In this post-riot era of Cincinnati history, Smitherman’s NAACP stands to redefine our City as a beacon of inclusiveness and activism.
