International Socialist Organization Opposes Chris Simox
Thursday, April 12, 2007
|
Yesterday, the International Socialist Organization at UC sent a letter to UC officials asking questions about an upcoming speech by Chris Simox. The ISO claims Simox has “a history of anti-immigrant racism, vigilante violence, xenophobia, and hints of fascism.” Here is a copy of their letter.

Is This Useful? Towards an Information Interface
Monday, April 09, 2007
|
I have always found the interface at the Cincinnati Elections Commission rather bulky and hard to use. So, volunteers with The Cincinnati Beacon are experimenting with other strategies for making information user-friendly for the public. Check out these offerings for campaign contributions to some current City Council members.

More Fountain Square Nightmares by 3CDC
Friday, April 06, 2007
|
Guest column by Bill Joiner.
I spent Friday afternoon doing exactly what corporate Cincinnati, as represented by their agent, 3CDC, wants. I parked in Fountain Square, shopped, went to the Contemporary Art Center, and had dinner. A possibly pleasant agenda, but every time that agenda impinged on Fountain Square, I couldn’t believe how incompetent 3CDC was, and how much they were working against their sponsors’ desires.

Drinking on the Job? Berding, Ghiz, and the Inebriated Budget Rumors!
Sunday, April 01, 2007
|
Several weeks ago, we all heard reports about how City Council had a late night negotiating session—trying to reach a compromise for the City’s budget. But less people have heard the reports about empty wine bottles being spotted in the trash cans of the offices of Leslie Ghiz and Jeff Berding. According to a source inside City Hall, those office staffs dealt with the stress of budget negotiations by getting drunk. Is it true?

Negotiations Begin Over “Model Contract” to Lift Thousands of Midwestern Service Workers Out of Pove
Tuesday, March 27, 2007
|
Contract talks to improve pay, benefits for 4,000 janitors and create a new economic standard for as many as 165,000 other service workers
Cincinnati—Just days after launching their groundbreaking “Three Cities One Future” Campaign, janitors headed to the bargaining table in Cincinnati today to negotiate a historic model contract that will create a new economic standard for 165,000 service workers in the Midwest. Initially impacting more than 4,000 janitors in the three cities in the coming months, the union contract will set minimum standards in pay, access to health care, and working hours for janitors employed by ABM, Jancoa, Professional Maintenance of Cincinnati, Aetna Building Maintenance, Scioto Corp, CSI, and One Source. The contractors provide janitorial and other services to commercial office buildings, mall, banks, universities, airports, museums, and municipal, county, and state offices throughout the region.

Status Report Detailing the Effect of Cincinnati Municipal Code 910-23
Monday, March 26, 2007
|
Here is the report from City Manager Milton Dohoney to the Mayor and members of Council. Items of particular interest: the City has spent more than $41,000 dollars over last year’s amount in defending City ordinance cases (which seems attributable to CMC 910-23); sixty-two guns have been confiscated (but no word on if those guns were unlicensed); 2,010 cases resulting in a 4th degree misdemeanor conviction.

WANTED Poster Attempts to Stir Controversy for Anniversary of Kabaka Oba’s Death
Saturday, March 24, 2007
|
Recently, an unmarked, brown envelop was sent to me via the USPS. The address was typed on a label, and there was no return address. Inside, the anonymous mailer placed a single piece of paper—the wanted poster pictured below. What is going on here? Why would someone put together a poster like this? Where do actions like this lead? What insights does it provide as we find ourselves approaching the one year anniversary of Kabaka Oba’s death?

Charlie Winburn, Sam Malone Oppose “Fascist Five” and Eat Chili
Sunday, March 18, 2007
|
Recently, Justin Jeffre and I were planning for the revolution at a local Skyline Chili when Sam Malone and Charlie Winburn grabbed a table in the opposite corner. We approached them, and they warmly welcomed us to their table, kindly offering to buy us lunch. For over an hour, we discussed a wide variety of issues about Cincinnati informally, but there was one point where Winburn and Malone wanted to go on the record—they oppose the recent actions of the so-called Fiscal Fascist Five (Ghiz, Berding, Bortz, Monzel, and Cole), who wanted to decimate human services from the City’s budget.

Charterites Radically Change Their Philosophy?
Wednesday, March 14, 2007
|
Recently, the Charter Committee informed me that I am not allowed to become a paying member because of the fact that I moderate The Cincinnati Beacon. (Read the full letter from Jeff Cramerding from the Charterites here.) A quick look at the Charter Committee’s web site, however, will show that this new decision marks an incredible change from the originally published mission of that organization.

Grudges, Joe Wessels, Rick Hines, and WCPO
Friday, March 09, 2007
|
In November of 2005, I published a story about Joe Wessels. As best I can tell, he is still upset at me about this story, even though it has been offline for over a year—until now. (I just decided to put it online again—so feel free to read this reposting.) Here’s the thing: the issue has become relevant again, given the nasty send-off Wessels recently published regarding the demise of CincyNation—a news aggregator of local headlines published by Rick Hines. So, for the hard-core web-heads out there paying close attention to Cincinnati blogospheric conditions, check out this latest installment!

In at the Cincy NewsAche blog, a commenter left a stunning message, asking for people to spread the word. WLWT Looks at 3CDC’s Leaky Garage
Tuesday, February 27, 2007
|
The story we posted on February 25th about 3CDC’s water-filled garage made it to television media this week, when WLWT filed this report about the profound leaking. And in many ways, the rise of the 3CDC leaky garage story to television news shows the power of new media in pushing stories to a higher level.

Pepper on Pot Laws, Portune’s Public Letter, and Prison
Monday, February 19, 2007
|
Recently, Hamilton County Commission President Todd Portune urged Cincinnati City Council to reconsider their recent criminalization of marijuana possession. But the entire idea to criminalize marijuana was originally introduced by David Pepper! What kind of new perspectives, therefore, does Pepper have on Cincinnati’s marijuana ordinance from the vantage of his new position on the County Commission?

Bill Joiner, a member of the Springfield Township Democratic Club, recently distributed the following email to a long list of recipients. In the message, he reveals details about an upcoming “birthday party” for Jeff Berding—which really appears to be a fundraiser with Berding’s Republican friends. In the following message (published with Joiner’s permission), see details about the members of the host committee, a Who’s Who of area Republicans.

Cities for Progress: Anti-War Resolutions Come to Cincinnati?
Saturday, February 10, 2007
|
In today’s Enquirer, Dan Klepal writes a snide piece about Councilmember David Crowley’s motion that Cincinnati pass a resolution opposing the war in Iraq. Klepal’s column begins with what sounds like a joke, ends with a quotation against Crowley’s resolution—and in the middle he briefly mentions a website without giving any details. It turns out that website—Cities for Progress—is a network of activists and leaders working for social change.

Enquirer Tinkers with Tranny, Thinks Twice
Wednesday, February 07, 2007
|
Yesterday, The Enquirer ran a headline entitled “Ford Tinkers with Tranny.” The story was really about Ford Motor Company’s potential investment in the Sharonville Transmission plant, but the headline had a perverted subtext: “tranny” is a commonly used word for “transexual,” and the word “tinker” has a playful connotation, to say the least. Was The Enquirer trying to drive web traffic through making people think their story was about something untoward? Why has the headline been changed at The Enquirer’s web site?

The Enquirer: Use Armless and Legless Boy To Promote Web Traffic!
Sunday, February 04, 2007

The Enquirer has reached a new low today, using a legless and armless high school student to drive traffic to their online blog network as a way to increase revenue. See for yourself. Today’s paper includes this fluff piece about Dustin Carter—another in a long series of “human-interest” stories capitalizing on this kid’s physical disability to sell advertisements.

Medical Association Apparently Backs Henry Heimlich’s Discredited Claims
Deaconess Associations, Inc. has totally revised the Heimlich Institute web presence, recently implementing a brand new look. (The site is actually listed as being registered by Barbara Lohr. In this recent newsletter, Lohr is named Director of Corporate Marking and Communications for Deaconess; she also has this email address through the Heimlich Institute:

Todd Portune Responds to Enquirer Coverage of Jail Issue
Sunday, January 28, 2007
|
Guest column by Hamilton County Commission President Todd Portune.
The new business model for the Enquirer is to drive as many “hits” as they can to their website for purposes of their on-line advertisers. They write their headlines to drive interest—not necessarily to inform the reader. They are assuredly presenting stories in such a way as to generate a “conversation.” I would characterize it as they are covering issues and writing about them, including headlines, in ways that are designed to arouse the public and drive people to want to write or otherwise get involved with the paper or its on-line presence.

Suing the County with County Money? Court Transcripts Revealed!
Tuesday, January 23, 2007

The following “transcript” apparently documents the meeting where Sheriff Leis won the right for the County to pay legal expenses so they could be sued. Throughout the transcipt, James Harper was called “Mr. Harp.” We corrected his name.
For anyone following this story, we figured apparent courtroom proceedings may shed some light on the issue.
Thanks to Michael Earl Patton for acquiring and providing this document.

Autism, YouTube, Online Discourse, and Radical Insight into Humanity
Monday, January 22, 2007
|
Hat-tip to Axinar
Something extraordinary has happened at YouTube: someone with Autism has used technology to give “neurotypical” minds an insight into non-standard thought processes. In other words, if you have ever seen a so-called “mentally disabled” person behave erratically, this video should give you a radically new understanding of the potential diversity of the human mind. This autistic user’s video transforms strange, autistic behavior into the kind of monk-like meditation you might otherwise expect from a spiritually enlightened practitioner of Eastern religion.
