“Merry Christmas” Evangelism: A Retrospective
Tuesday, December 27, 2005
|
I think a recent post by local blogger Brendan Cronin encapsulates the problem when members of a dominant religion find their personal experiences somehow universal. How convenient for this hegemony when its own feelings are the most enlightening and transcendent. At least that’s how Cronin characterizes himself in a column entitled simply ”Merry Christmas.”

Mayor Mallory’s Budget Rush?
Wednesday, December 21, 2005
|
At Tuesday’s press conference, Mayor Mallory responded to criticisms that the new budget does not include aspects promised from his campaign—like an Office of Environmental Management, or a Safety Director. Mallory stated that the current budget is a “continuation” budget, including policy from the previous Council. He promised to address his campaign points for the budget to be discussed at this time next year. But according to my sources, all may not be precisely as our new Mayor makes it appear.

Impeach Bush
Sunday, December 18, 2005
|
This nation is becoming too similar to a battered spouse that we would see in a cheesy television drama. President Bush keeps smacking us in the face and telling us if we knew what was good for us we would shut up and be thankful.

Justin Jeffre to Consider Congressional Run
Saturday, December 17, 2005
|
When asked about his recent run for the Cincinnati mayoral primary, Justin Jeffre talks about the effect he had on the race and the City’s political dialogue. Though his primary votes were low, Jeffre notes that other so-called major candidates were quick to echo some of his platform ideas and talking points, like having a “bold vision” (Pepper), and creating a plan to “sell the City back to Cincinnati” (Mallory). Jeffre believes this is an effect independent candidates can have on elections pushing talking points and other ideas to the level of critical mass. And when it comes to a Congressional run against Steve Chabot and John Cranley, he has some clear objectives not necessarily related to winning.

Reform is the Word
Sunday, December 11, 2005
|
"One day, like anything, things will change” said Christopher Smitherman.
Citizens and candidates who “lost” in this year’s council election aren’t taking time to sulk or feel sorry about themselves. Instead they took time on an icy Saturday morning to begin organizing and rallying for change. Candidates from different view points and different parties came together to talk about ways we can change the system and improve the democratic process.

“Million Dollar Nigger” on the Auction Block
Saturday, December 10, 2005
|
The personal belongings of a dead racist recently went on sale for charity. A large mob of white people assembled to bid on items, from carved wooden elephants to dog bowls and of course to remember fondly their icon, Marge Schott: the N-bomb dropping old lady with “a big heart.” And thus the game of political spin continues about someone who once referred to Eric Davis and Dave Parker as her “million dollar niggers.”

Senate Hopeful Bill Pierce Sexually Inexperienced
Thursday, December 08, 2005
|
Exaggerated headline? Perhaps, but last night’s meeting at the Anderson Republican Club afforded some Ohio candidates the opportunity to speak to an audience of approximately 100 white people. Right-winged rhetoric was turned on high as several candidates catered to some standard sounding boards, prompting Bill Pierce to tell the audience that his wife of 33 years is the only girlfriend he has ever had. This marital faithfulness may be exemplary, but contexualized within last night’s meeting as a whole another picture emerges.

Should the Process be Slowed?
Thursday, December 08, 2005
|
In a joint statement, City Councilmembers Laketa Cole and David Crowley encouraged citizens to contact City Council to protest a new movement to change the rules about how Council conducts business. Crowley said: “This is more than just tweaking some rules, this is the way in which our government and elected officials operate. This is not Council’s business it is the public’s. We have a duty to provide adequate public input before making sweeping changes to the rules, these aren’t our rules they are the citizen’s rules.”
