Hey Portune!  How much to “rent” public space?
Saturday, October 06, 2007

Dear Commissioner Portune:

A recent Enquirer article mentions the press conference where you and Republican Si Leis displayed lots of scary weapons to promote the new jail proposal.  That same article refers to the elevator lobby as “public space,” and it also mentions that you wanted to go “overboard” by requesting a bill for space rental.  These two bits of information beg two important questions.

Hey Gannett!  Check your standards!
Friday, August 17, 2007

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this letter in regards to recent stories at The Cincinnati Enquirer which seem to violate commonly accepted standards of media reporting.  As outlined by respected organizations like the World Health Organization, media outlets should be careful when handling suicide.  Specifically, front page headlines and details about specific methods used should be avoided.  The Enquirer has violated both of those commonly accepted codes.

Hey CPS Board, What Are You Doing?
Tuesday, August 14, 2007

Dear Members of the CPS Board:

I would like to know what the CPS Board has been doing to put pressure on state legislators concerning the fact that Ohio’s school funding formula has been found unconstitutional on several occasions.  Further, if Ohio had a constitutional form of funding schools, I’m wondering if you know how that would impact your requests for higher taxes.  And lastly, do you intend to make all of this a part of the upcoming campaign, to mobilize voters to push for constitutional school funding in Ohio?

Hey Dr. Owens:  Suicide Stats, Please!
Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Dr. Owens,

I am interested in our region’s suicide statistics from the week starting Sunday, June 24th as compared to the prior week and the subsequent week.  I am also interested in “accidental deaths” from things like drug overdoses, car exhaust fumes, etc.

What is the best way for me to obtain those details from your office?

Thanks,

The Dean of Cincinnati

Letter to the BBB:  Enquirer’s Suicide Coverage!
Monday, June 25, 2007

This was recently submitted to the Cincinnati Better Business Bureau.  For a “settlement,” I have requested a front page Sunday story about how to reduce violence in our community, self-inflicted or otherwise.

On Sunday, June 24th, The Cincinnati Enquirer ran a front page story about suicide.  (Find it online here:  http://tinyurl.com/2zhbdd ) This violates all accepted practices regarding journalism ethics.  For example, you can find the Wolrd Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for media handling of suicide here:  http://tinyurl.com/29xmer

The Enquirer’s Plagiarism Policy, Please?
Tuesday, June 05, 2007

Dear Tom Callinan:

As Vice President of Content, I thought you may wish to take a closer look at your paper’s sports content, especially as it looks like your paper is guilty of plagiarism.  I am writing this letter because I would like to know (1) The Enquirer’s policy towards plagiarism, and (2) how your paper responds to allegations that a recent sports column crossed the line.

The Dean’s Letter to the Editor of The Post
Sunday, May 20, 2007

Dear Cincinnati Post:

In today’s story by Joe Wessels (”Reporters need not apply” ), Jeff Cramerding said that partisans and journalists don’t go together—and that is why I am not allowed to join the Charter Party. Cramerding failed to mention (perhaps because he does not know) that the Charter Party is a non-partisan organization.

2nd Request—Cecil Thomas still not providing information!
Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Councilmember Thomas:

Below, you will see a copy of the public records request I submitted to you on March 31st.  I have not heard back from your office in regards to this matter.  As indicated in the original letter, the Ohio Public Records Act requires that all public records “...be promptly prepared.” It has been three weeks, and I have heard nothing from you.  Given the discussion that was happening during my initial request, the information should be readily available to you.
