Media Activism Pay-Off: Making It To Print
Wednesday, February 07, 2007
|
Sometimes, I resist the labels “blogger” or “journalist.” I have always fancied myself a “media activist.” When I speak to area college journalism students, I talk about how I view my work as pushing concepts towards the critical mass. In other words, I think I have sometimes helped get stories into bigger media outlets, and I have also provided an outlet for stories that may not otherwise get coverage. In this week’s CityBeat, two separate articles have acknowledged our work here at The Beacon. As such, I would like to take this time to showcase those acknowledgments, as well as to thank everyone behind-the-scenes who makes this project possible.

Does the Conservative Movement have a Candidate in 2008?
Sunday, February 04, 2007
|
The conservative base is highly disillusioned about their choices for a Republican candidate to represent them in the 2008 presidential election. This disillusionment is well illustrated by a statement Rush Limbaugh made last week to his massive and largely conservative radio audience, “To be honest with you, there’s nobody out there that revs me up, so why should I pretend there is?”

Todd Portune Rejects Comparisons to Bedinghaus
Sunday, February 04, 2007
|
After a cursory glance, the evidence seems convincing enough: high-profile Republicans associated with The Bengals (like Stuart Dornette) supported David Pepper in his bid for County Commissioner. Pepper’s victory installs Todd Portune as Hamilton County Commission President. And in a recent Enquirer article, we find out that Portune has no intentions to file any more suits against The Bengals. Is it fair to suspect that Portune may have been involved in some kind of political quid quo pro, turning into another Bedinghaus? Or, are such characterizations just an attempt at baseless spin?

Grandma in Iraq—A Retrospective
Wednesday, January 31, 2007
|
Last year, The Cincinnati Enquirer sponsored a blog authored by Suzanne Fournier entitled “Grandma in Iraq.” The blog made no real impact until someone noticed that Suzanne Fournier’s military affiliations were not disclosed. So we had a military PR person writing fluff stories about the war, but a casual reader of the blog might not have understood the writing came from such a biased source. After The Enquirer got blasted for their failure to disclose that information, Executive Editor Tom Callinan debuted his own blog. Critics thought he did so as a distraction to the Grandma debacle. A few short weeks later, both blogs were taken offline permanently. Now, we are pleased to present an insight into the communications that took place behind the scenes between Suzanne Fournier and The Enquirer.

Peace Activist Bert Sacks Challenges U.S. Fine For Bringing Humanitarian Aid to Iraq in 1997
Wednesday, January 24, 2007
|
The U.S. government fined him $10,000 but Sacks has refused to pay. He has argued that the actual crime was not his humanitarian efforts but the U.S. sanctions. It has been estimated that the sanctions led to the death of 500,000 Iraqi children. His petition questions whether it was legal for the US to have knowingly caused the deaths of Iraqis through sanctions.

Do new Ohio recount prosecutions indicate unraveling of 2004 election theft cover-up?
Monday, January 22, 2007
|
It was said that Ohio would be the Florida of 2004. Evidence continues to surface that the 2004 election in Ohio may have been stolen. Investigative reporters Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman have brought much of the information that is known to light. Their work was the basis for the Conyers report “What went wrong in Ohio?” and RFKs well known Rolling Stone article “Was the 2004 election Stolen?”. They aren’t Democrats and election reform is a non-partisan issue.

“We Knew Damn Well He’d Be Tortured”
Sunday, January 21, 2007
|
The Bush administration’s handling of the case of Maher Arar came under new scrutiny Thursday when Attorney General Alberto Gonzales appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee, now controlled by the Democrats. Arar is the Canadian citizen who was seized by U.S. officials during a stopover flight in New York in 2002. He was secretly sent to Syria as part of the Bush administration’s extraordinary rendition program.

Stephen Hawking warns: We must recognise the catastrophic dangers of climate change
Friday, January 19, 2007
|
As the “Doomsday Clock “ is moved to five minutes to midnight we should consider the warnings of scientists around the world. “As citizens of the world, we have a duty to share that knowledge. We have a duty, as well, to alert the public to the unnecessary risks that we live with every day, and to the perils we foresee if governments and societies do not take action now to render nuclear weapons obsolete and to prevent further climate change.” -Stephen Hawking

The Cincinnati Beacon’s “Independent Eye”
Wednesday, January 17, 2007
|
The Independent Eye was the name of Cincinnati’s first underground newspaper several decades ago—and it was also the name of an experimental media project mounted by Steve Novotni a couple years back. Novotni, former publisher of X-Ray Cincinnati, wanted to reinvent his monthly print publication while striking a more robust online presence. Ultimately, the project never came to fruition as Novotni pursued other interests. However, now that Jusin Jeffre has dedicated more time to serving as a media filter for The Beacon, we have decided to honor the memory of The Eye with this new section for bringing you news.
