Tuesday, August 28, 2007
|
Guest article by Scott A Morgan
Tensions are again acute in the Horn of Africa. Charges of supporting terrorism have once again been leveled at Eritrea by both the Ethiopian Government and by the US State Department. The complexities of this crisis are as widespread as much as they are unknown generally to the American Public.

The Other Side: Ron Brown, Lawn Mower Lover and Vacuum Collector
Saturday, August 18, 2007
|
In today’s Enquirer, Dan Horn wrote a totally one-sided story about Ron Brown: ”Trashed houses land man in jail.” The story includes statements from the Department of Building and Inspections and Westwood Concern, but none from the accused himself, any of his family, nor his associates. So we interviewed Stephen Dapper, a property rights activist who has been watching this situation develop and who is familiar with the details of Ron Brown’s situation.

Acronyms are NOT a City Council platform
Thursday, August 16, 2007

City Council Candidate George Zamary gets ready for a loss.
Awkwardly contrived campaign acronyms should never suffice for a political platform for a high profile office like Cincinnati City Council. But apparently they didn’t teach that one to George Zamary when he want to law school. That must be why his campaign web page has a lame platform based on the idea that Cincinnati should “SOAR to new heights.”

The price of a council seat is rising in the best democracy money can buy
Friday, August 10, 2007
|
You can now invest even more money into our corrupt elections than before and that means better returns for the wealthy few. Money is a corrupting influence in politics. It is contempt for democracy. It is nothing more than legalized bribery and an elaborate money laundering scheme.

Too Much Estrogen!
Sunday, August 05, 2007
|
Some of the most insidious water pollution are chemicals that are only present in extremely small quantities. They do not make the water appear dirty or give it a funny taste. They are not what we commonly would think of as poisons, such as mercury. They are not chemicals that are foreign to humans. In fact, they are identical or similar to chemicals that our bodies produce and which are vital to human life. The problem is that there is too much of them in our rivers and streams.

Outcome of contract negotiations today, tomorrow could decide whether janitors will walk off the job
Cincinnati – With hundreds of Cincinnati janitors ready to walk off the job if necessary, workers are heading to the bargaining table today in their first contract talks since voting to authorize a strike. In a show of support for janitors and a call for Cincinnati’s building landlords to support good jobs with access to health care and more work hours for all Cincinnati families, a group of faith and community leaders are holding a prayer service with the janitors prior to contract negotiations outside the Westin Hotel downtown this morning. Janitors will go into contract talks inside the hotel immediately following the prayer service.

First Amendment Abridged at Fountain Square
Sunday, July 22, 2007
|
While the recent petition for putting the sales tax increase to a public referendum was being circulated, the No Jail Tax PAC heard reports that some petitioners were prevented by the police from gathering signatures on Fountain Square. Some others, including myself, had been left alone. Then in the last few days of the campaign a petitioner came forward with full details, including the name of the police officer who had stopped her. I called Bill Donabedian of 3CDC, who is responsible for the management of the square. He explained that gathering signatures on the square while a scheduled event was in progress was considered interference with that event and the petitioner should move to the sidewalk.

Segway Escape
Saturday, July 14, 2007
|
I just don’t understand the fixation on police officers with Segways. If I ever found a cop on a funny looking scooter coming for me, I’d run into someone’s backyard and over a fence. As the cop would have to ditch the scooter to hop the fence, I’d just run back in a circle, hop on the abandoned Segway, and get away.

What are the rules? NAACP and Public Office
Wednesday, July 11, 2007
|
Update: CityBeat gets the answer: No conflict for Smtitherman!
Questions are starting to arise about an alleged rule in the NAACP that says its elected leaders cannot run for public office. If true, that would put Christopher Smitherman’s city council campaign at odds. Further, there are several politicians throughout the country who serve on the NAACP and hold elected office, and those people must all be at odds, too. But what is the specific language of this alleged rule? And why is it so difficult to find?

Mayor Mallory’s Airport Plan: Then, and Now
Thursday, July 05, 2007
|
Jenny Edwards contributed to this report.
In July of 2005, Mayor Mark Mallory—then a candidate for the position—circulated an email introducing his plan for selling the Blue Ash Airport. In yesterday’s Enquirer, Steve Kemme writes about how those payments will work from the Blue Ash to Cincinnati. Let’s take a quick look at the Blue Ash Airport plan, then and now, to see what we can gather from the development’s progress through July 2005 through July 2007.

Do you think the Beacon can’t expand into radio? Think again!
Friday, June 22, 2007
|
Congress members Mike Doyle and Lee Terry just introduced the Local Community Radio Act of 2007 to allow the FCC to grant more licenses to low-power FM stations. A similar bill is being introduced in the Senate. The FCC is opening the door for new noncommercial full-power radio stations. They announced there will be a week long window beginning in mid-October for applications to be filed.
