War With Iran Planned?
Tuesday, July 17, 2007
|
As you all know, I am very concerned about a possible war with Iran in the near future, and that this war would be started by the United States. Now Patrick Buchanen has the same warning.

Allegedly “Divisive” Smitherman Brings Community Together with 56,941 Signatures!
Friday, July 13, 2007
|
For many people, The Enquirer’s version of Christopher Smitherman’s reputation precedes him: you probably know him as divisive, and maybe even as anti-white. (Maybe you even heard that he hates Catholics, too. Has anyone ever asked him what church he attends?) In any event, I find it remarkable that an allegedly divisive and anti-white figure could lead a broad coalition—featuring citizens of different races, classes, and political persuasions—to bring our community together in a wildly successful petition drive. Today’s figures have the total number of signatures at 56,941.

Editorial Cartoon: Jeff Berding on Smitherman
Tuesday, July 10, 2007
|
I don’t know if anyone else caught this quote from last weeks article in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Originally, tried to draw Leslie Ghiz going off on the Mayor in the background, but just couldn’t get it just right.

Healthcare or Wealthcare? HMO Whistleblower Dr. Linda Peeno Speaks
Thursday, June 28, 2007
|
In 1996 Dr. Linda Peeno made headlines when she appeared before Congress to confess about her work as a medical reviewer for the giant HMO Humana. “When I actually went to interview, I was asked if I could be tough, because I was going to be telling doctors that they couldn’t do things and that I would be expected to keep a 10% denial rate.”

3CDC and City Council’s idea of an “Emergency”
Thursday, June 21, 2007
|
Recently, I sent this letter to the Department of Building and Inspections about 3CDC’s LED screen at Fountain Square. It appears that screen, which is really an outdoor advertising sign, violates portions of the Cincinnati Municipal Code. Turns out there is not a violation—and in the legalities of the LED screen even more shocking questions are uncovered.

A Few Notes On a Shooting
Sunday, June 17, 2007
|
Saturday afternoon I was talking with a couple of companions of mine as they were renovating a house in Walnut Hills. Suddenly, we heard shots and, as we soon discovered, a man had just been shot. This was my first experience with a shooting, and I discovered serious gaps in my response and those of the police.

Corporate infiltration of public spaces? The 3CDC Jumbotron
Wednesday, June 13, 2007
|
A few days ago, I was looking over the procedure for submitting content to the big screen dominating the western view at 3CDC’s corporatized Fountain Square. I noticed the application specifies that access to broadcasting on the screen does not constitute “public access,” and I started wondering what it means for a private corporation to have exclusive broadcasting rights over our central public space. And then I thought about the speakers on the Square, and that’s when it hit me.

The Un-democratic Democratic Party
Thursday, June 07, 2007
|
The Hamilton County Democratic Party has been contacting its members and telling them not to sign the petition to demand a vote on the jail tax. This pressure may explain the behavior of the two Democratic candidates for council I have asked so far to sign the petition. Both were aware of the issues and privately expressed sympathy for the fact that the new jail plan would not remedy the root problems. But both said that they had to consider the issue more thoroughly before they signed the petition.

From the Distribution Trail: Hatred of the Jail
Tuesday, June 05, 2007
|
I have had several interesting experiences out distributing copies of The Cincinnati Beacon this past weekend, but one stands out—particularly given the raw rage a few people felt towards Commissioners Portune and Pepper concerning the new jail tax. For what will become obvious reasons, I will leave the location nameless, as not to get any of their employees arrested on charges of terrorism.

Smitherman’s First Test: Jail Tax Opposition
Friday, June 01, 2007
|
Christopher Smitherman, president of the Cincinnati NAACP, will face his first test as he emerges at the front of the battle to overturn Todd Portune’s imposed regressive sales tax. The success or failure of this campaign may very well determine what kind of political capital Smitherman’s NAACP can earn in the future.

Ban Car Exhaust in Drive-Thru Convenience Stores?
Tuesday, May 29, 2007
|
The rhetoric surrounding the state-wide smoking ban was framed as a public health issue—and while consumers could have decided not to patronize a business that allowed smoking, we were told about those poor employees, subjected to inhaling second hand smoke by virtue of their employment. If that is a true concern, then why hasn’t someone decided to shut down all the drive-through convenience stores which subject their employees to car exhaust?

Hey, Todd Portune: Here’s all some of us want!
Saturday, May 26, 2007
|
So-called Democrats have been getting agitated with those progressive voices speaking against the regressive sales tax increase for funding a big new jail. They keep pointing to the promise of improvement through moving treatment out of communities and into institutions, and they say our disagreements are nothing but a defense of the stagnant and ineffective status-quo. Apparently, these voices have not been listening—so for their benefit, as well as for the benefit of Commissioners Todd Portune and David Pepper, let me try to make this as simple as possible.
