CityBeat:  Time to Dump the Banks?
Wednesday, August 29, 2007

I have long wondered why I should care if some rich people have a condo on the river, and further why I should be compelled to believe my tax dollars should fund such real estate development.  (In fact, it seems to me that the banks are literally the only institutions set to profit off The Banks!) And now CityBeat is asking for input, about whether or not this real estate development project really matters to regular citizens.  Is a groundswell against this project mounting?

The Enquirer is happy to provide instructions for suicide
Friday, August 17, 2007

According to standard media ethics, reporting on suicide should be avoided.  Even the World Health Organization has this document, outlining guidelines for media professionals.  The Cincinnati Enquirer, however, has no such standards, and once again they have decided to provide details about how someone decided to commit suicide.  (Read about their first mistake here.) This is an irresponsible lapse in ethics on behalf of The Enquirer.

Court Clerk Restricts Viewing of Brinkman’s Suit Against County, City
Tuesday, August 14, 2007

On August 9 State Representative Tom Brinkman, along with Mark Miller, filed a lawsuit against the City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County alleging that the $75,000 given to a film commission from the proceeds of a hotel tax is in violation of the Ohio Revised Code.  The Cincinnati Beacon tried to obtain a copy of the lawsuit and subsequent documents from the Hamilton County Clerk of Court’s website, http://www.courtclerk.org, but was prevented from doing so because of a lock-out policy instituted by the clerk of courts, Greg Hartmann.  The Cincinnati Beacon obtained a copy instead from one of the plaintiffs, Tom Brinkman.

Calling for a Takeover of Norwood, St. Bernard
Sunday, August 12, 2007

The City of Cincinnati has two separate cities totally enveloped within its boundaries:  Norwood, and St. Bernard.  Why is that?  What is different about Norwood and St. Bernard that would make them separate entities?  Does it have anything to do with Norwood’s old car manufacturers and St. Bernard’s P&G?  When all of the area’s neighborhoods got established as the City of Cincinnati, did corporate interests keep Norwood and St. Bernard separate, perhaps for some taxing purposes?

Bearman Editorial Cartoon - Leslie Ghiz and McMurphys Bar
Tuesday, August 07, 2007

This letter to the editor in todays paper made me have to draw this at lunch today because I found it hilarious.

Apparently Leslie Ghiz is against RP McMurphys Bar keeping it’s liquor license but that doesn’t stop her from going there drinking and trying to get votes.

Brinkman:  Close City Health Clinics! (Then re-open them with State dollars…)
Saturday, August 04, 2007

Last night, I was enjoying some food and spirits courtesy of Chris Finney and COAST—celebrating the successful petition drive headed by the NAACP—and State Rep. Tom Brinkman had some interesting things to say about the City’s health clinics.  (Some may here wonder how I could go out with COAST members, then wake up the next morning and publish a post blasting them, but as Walt Whitman once said:  “Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.") Anyway, Brinkman claims that the City of Cincinnati wastes tons of money operating health clinics when the State could actually fund them instead.

A New Battle in Congress: Lobbyists v Human Rights
Thursday, August 02, 2007

Guest article by Scott A. Morgan

We all noticed last fall when the American Voters decidely threw out an Incompetent Republican Congress and replaced them with the Democrats. But it is becoming clear that if WE expected a change in how things are run in Washington we were sadly mistaken.

AFRICOM: Why does Africa fear this?
Sunday, July 29, 2007

Guest article by Scott A. Morgan.

As Part of its efforts to reform the structure within the Pentagon it has been decided that the United States will give African Concerns their own command. When the new Fiscal Year begins this fall the Command will officially begin and will have a permanent base in Germany for now.

Butler County to Lower Sales Tax
Monday, July 23, 2007

According to our sources, Butler County Commissioner Greg Jolivette recently confirmed that their sales tax is scheduled to go down to 6.25%.  What does this news do to Hamilton County’s efforts to increase the sales tax?  While Mayor Mark Mallory has tried to challenge census data, claiming that Cincinnati is actually growing, the local real estate market is filled with more people trying to sell than are currently buying.  The City of Cincinnati has high property taxes compared to neighboring areas, and now the very cost of doing business will increase—as anyone selling something now has to worry if Hamilton County buyers will simply drive to Butler County to save on the sales tax.

M-1 of dead prez: “Community controlled” radio and hip hop
Thursday, July 19, 2007

You hear lots of complaints these days about hip hop music and culture, but keep in mind that as with most important decisions, it’s a handful of rich, white, men that decides what gets played on radio stations across the country. A small number of older, rich, white, men—for the most part—still decide what artists get signed and played.
