Hey Portune!  just the facts, please!
Monday, October 08, 2007

In a recent interview with Justin Jeffre, Hamilton County Commission President Todd Portune accused people opposed to the jail plan of willfully misrepresenting the facts. His implication seems clear:  the anti-jail side spreads lies, while the pro-jail side sticks with the truth.  One must wonder, however, when Todd Portune purports to be speaking the truth whether he presents “the whole truth,” or just those portions that suit his issue du jour.

Paying for Imaginary Flushes
Saturday, October 06, 2007

It seems obvious, but people generally use less of something if they have to pay for it.  Most people would assume that the more they use, the more they pay.  The more you drive, the more gasoline you have to buy, and the more you pay for that gasoline.  The more you run your air conditioner, the more you pay in electricity.  No one would ever imagine a system where one paid for running the air conditioner 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no matter if it were turned on or off.  Yet something similar happens to many customers when they pay their water bills.

A Line in the Sand
Friday, September 28, 2007

Guest article by Aidan Delgado

Never do anything against conscience, even if the state demands it.

-Albert Einstein

On the morning of September 11th 2001, I enlisted in the United States Army Reserve. As I signed my contract, everyone was suddenly distracted by something on the television. The disaster unfolded. Yet I, as a naïve eighteen year old, felt myself filling with moral certainty and righteousness: The homeland is under attack. This is the reason we have a military. I never considered that what happened that day, the feelings it unleashed in the American people, would lead us far so astray. I could not have conceived that three years after that day, I would be standing inside Abu Ghraib prison looking at photographs of prisoners that my colleagues, other US soldiers, had just shot and desecrated.

Flashback:  Smitherman’s Warning about the Retirement System
Monday, September 24, 2007

On June 30, 2006, we featured the following video with Christopher Smitherman, warning about an upcoming disaster concerning the retirement system.  His projected dates may have been off, but given the recent developments regarding the retirement system, it seems time to revisit his warnings!  (Smitherman was even interviewed for this article in the New York Times by Mary Williams Walsh.) We must face the potential problems with the system if we are going to support the retirees in any real way.

Michael Earl Patton, To The Rescue!
Thursday, September 20, 2007

Thank God for MEP.  Without him, we might not have had a wide distribution of where it looks like Si Leis might be using taxpayer dollars to campaign for the jail tax!  And because of Michael Earl Patton, The Cincinnati Beacon’s presentation of this evidence has been entered into the suit against Leis, and we have even been mentioned in the suit!

Foster Care: Is Ohio Penny-Wise and Dollar Foolish?
Saturday, September 15, 2007

Is Ohio often penny-wise and dollar-foolish when it comes to foster care?  That is the contention of the Contact Center’s Safe & Stable Families Campaign. During the Hamilton County Commissioners’ meeting Wednesday several people spoke out about the importance of placing children with relatives if they have to be removed from their biological parents.  Yet relatives receive far less support payments than foster parents who are not related.  The amount of support is so small that in many cases the family cannot accept the child.  If the relatives live in a small place to begin with, the county may even refuse to consider placing the child there.

More Questions on the Charter Scandal
Wednesday, September 12, 2007

The more I think about the alleged “Charter Party,” the more questions I have.  Yesterday, I started thinking about their bank accounts.  All bank accounts must have one of two things:  an associated Social Security Number, or a Tax ID Number.  Which one is tagged to the Charter Committee’s bank accounts?

Neil Bortz = No Interest Campaign Loans?
Sunday, September 09, 2007

When regular people want a short term loan, they are subjected to the high interest rates and harassing collections tactics from predatory lending agencies like “Check Into Cash.” But, if you are a high-profile politician, and you want to borrow a thousand dollars, the solution is simple:  just get a donation from a friend that is over the amount allowed, and then take your good old time paying it back!  There is not a penalty for borrowing money in this manner!  And it looks like that’s just what Jeff “Gerald” Berding has done with Neil Bortz.

CityBeat’s Squeeze:  No More Monthly Columns!
Friday, September 07, 2007

Word has it that CityBeat has just given the axe to their monthly columnists—including Ben Kaufman and Dan LaBotz—so they could save the $75 fee they used to pay.  This is sad news, when CityBeat is forced to follow suit of cutting interesting content so it can beef up ad revenue profits.  Is this another example of downtown office space being judged more important than keeping good writers on payroll?

Simon Leis:  Campaign Solicitations on the Taxpayer’s Dime?
Sunday, September 02, 2007

The Cincinnati Beacon has obtained a copy of a letter that the Hamilton County Sheriff has sent to his employees encouraging all of them to vote for the jail tax and mentioning that layoffs are a real possibility if it does not pass.  Many things are noteworthy about this letter, perhaps the most notable is that this is a campaign solicitation that was sent from the sheriff to his personnel.

CityBeat:  Time to Dump the Banks?
Wednesday, August 29, 2007

I have long wondered why I should care if some rich people have a condo on the river, and further why I should be compelled to believe my tax dollars should fund such real estate development.  (In fact, it seems to me that the banks are literally the only institutions set to profit off The Banks!) And now CityBeat is asking for input, about whether or not this real estate development project really matters to regular citizens.  Is a groundswell against this project mounting?
