Monday, December 19, 2005

by Mayor Mark Mallory

The 2006 City of Cincinnati budget as presented by the City Manager is a fiscally sound response to the citys needs and challenges.  As a continuation budget tied to the 2005 budget, it is meant to continue the progress made in areas of critical concern to the city.  The budget as presented provides basic funding for essential services and includes a limited number of initiatives designed to address critical needs.

Impeach Bush
Sunday, December 18, 2005

This nation is becoming too similar to a battered spouse that we would see in a cheesy television drama. President Bush keeps smacking us in the face and telling us if we knew what was good for us we would shut up and be thankful.

Santa’s Christmas Gift:  The Opportunity To Buy Stuff!
Sunday, December 18, 2005

Yesterday, my wife forced me to accompany her and my son to Kenwood Towne Centre where she made an appointment to have family portraits taken at The Picture People because she had a coupon.  While there, she also insisted that we have our son’s photo taken with Santa.  Each child who had a photo op was given the chance to talk with Santa for a minute before being handed a “gift.” So what was the Kenwood Santa giving youngsters this holiday season?

King Kong = Fear of Black Man
Saturday, December 17, 2005

Now that King Kong has been rereleased, we might as well be honest with one another about the true meaning of that story.  Just consider the plot:  an enormous and scary black gorilla kidnaps a blonde white lady and the white folks kill him.  This is a familiar story of unconscious racism told through white mainstream media and art.

Justin Jeffre to Consider Congressional Run
Saturday, December 17, 2005

When asked about his recent run for the Cincinnati mayoral primary, Justin Jeffre talks about the effect he had on the race and the City’s political dialogue.  Though his primary votes were low, Jeffre notes that other so-called major candidates were quick to echo some of his platform ideas and talking points, like having a “bold vision” (Pepper), and creating a plan to “sell the City back to Cincinnati” (Mallory).  Jeffre believes this is an effect independent candidates can have on elections pushing talking points and other ideas to the level of critical mass.  And when it comes to a Congressional run against Steve Chabot and John Cranley, he has some clear objectives not necessarily related to winning.

Ohio Civil Rights Commission Tramples on the First Amendment
Friday, December 16, 2005

by Steve Fritsch, via The Blue Chip Review

Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech.
- United States Constitution

When I first heard that the Ohio Civil Rights Commission agreed unanimously that Pleasure Inn owner Tom Ullum was guilty of practicing discrimination for his storefront window sign For service speak English, I was obviously angry and disappointed.

I thought to myself, What in the hell is going on in this country?

Consumer Alert:  Beware Used Baby Car Seats!
Thursday, December 15, 2005

This morning, my wife was in a car accident:  she was rear-ended while stopped to turn left.  She had our two-and-a-half year old son in the car, and our fifteen-month-old nephew.  When we took the kids to the emergency room for a check up, the ER doctor told us something we had never heard before children’s car seats are no good after being involved in an accident.  The first thing that came to my mind were places like Once Upon A Child , which sells used items (including children’s car seats).
