Someone must have had a conversation with Andre Harper (candidate for City Council, 2007) about how imagery can relate to one’s ability to win public office: he has changed his web site’s photo from an absurd shot wearing a turlteneck to a more standard image of himself wearing a suit. The difference in how Harper comes across with just a simple change of photo is shocking. We’ve got the comparison shots below.

They almost look like different people entirely! The metrosexuality of the first image is striking: the neatly trimmed and sparkling afro, the large smile with teeth enhanced by whitening, the maroon turtleneck with a suit jacket on for good measure. In the first picure, it is easy to image that Andre Harper really thinks he’s sexy, or something.
The second is all about business: the standard black guy buzz cut, the standard business suit with traditional colors, closed lips as not to draw attention to the teeth.
As of this publication, however, Harper still has some weird things he’ll need to reconsider if anyone will ever take him seriously. For example, his front page still says this:
This is why I have decided to run for Cincinnati City Council. On November 6, 2007 The Queen shall return to her throne.
The way this is structured, Andre Harper is calling himself “The Queen.” Any black male Republican hoping to win cannot go around calling himself a Queen.
And this business about a ”manifesto”—it’s just too weird for the mainstream. It comes across not as memorable, but as freaky.
And finally, Mr. Harper, get that stupid bird outline off the background of your page. We don’t understand what it’s doing there, and it comes across as unprofessional!
